Prof Adamu Ahmed is new Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University

Prof Adamu Ahmed has been picked as the new Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University by the institution's Governing Council.

Ahmed teaches at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the institution. 

A one time Director of the institution's Directorate of University Advancement, Prof Ahmed is the current Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the Federal University of Education, Kano.

Prof Ahmed's appointment was announced at 6:15 am today (Wednesday, 5th February, 2025) during the 209th (Special) Council meeting presided over by its Chairman, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR.

In a well-deserved recognition of his academic excellence and leadership, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Adamu Ahmed, a distinguished scholar of urban and regional planning, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Education, Kano.

Professor Ahmed, a prolific academic and administrator, has spent over three decades at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he has taught, mentored, and inspired generations of students. His academic journey began at ABU, where he earned his first, second, and PhD degrees, laying the foundation for his remarkable career.

Throughout his illustrious career, Professor Ahmed has held various leadership positions, including Head of Urban and Regional Planning, Deputy Director of ABU Consultancy Services, and Director of the Directorate of University Advancement. His achievements in these roles have been marked by unparalleled success, including attracting grants and elevating the university’s reputation.

His expertise extends beyond the academic sphere, having served as Commissioner of Lands and Survey in Bauchi State, in the first term of the incumbent Governor, Alhaji Bala Mohammed, a position he held with distinction for two years. Professor Ahmed’s contributions to urban and regional planning are recognized globally, with involvement in numerous local and international initiatives.

This appointment is a testament to Professor Ahmed’s stature as an icon of international repute, and his dedication to education and leadership. As Pro-Chancellor, he is poised to bring his vast experience and expertise to bear, guiding the Federal University of Education, Kano, towards excellence.

The renowned Professor has also served as Member, Committee on the implementation of White Paper Reports to the University of Maiduguri, FUT Yola and ATBU Bauchi (2007); Member, Presidential Visitation Panel to Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurum (2012) and Member, Federal Government Needs Assessment Team to University of Ibadan, OAU and Osun State University (2012).

The Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria has approved the appointment of Professor Adamu Ahmed as the 14th Vice Chancellor of the University.

Professor Ahmed who was among the 14 contenders that were interviewed by the Alhaji Yayale-led Governing Council was second while Professor SZ Abubakar was 1st and Professor Idris Funtua came 3rd.

It’s worth noting that Professor Adamu Ahmed has had a distinguished academic career, with over three decades of experience at ABU Zaria. He has also been recognized for his academic excellence and leadership, having been appointed as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Education, Kano by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The appointment of Professor Adamu Ahmed as the new Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria is seen as a well-deserved recognition of his academic excellence and leadership qualities.
