Niger’s President Abdourahmane Tchiani is facing a backlash of criticism from his fellow countrymen following his recent allegation of a conspiracy by Nigeria against his country.
Tchiani in a Christmas Day interview claimed, among other things, that Nigeria had provided a base for French soldiers near Lake Chad had established training camps for terrorists in Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states, all aimed at destabilising Niger.
The Federal Government has dismissed the allegations as baseless, with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, being the latest government official to debunk the claims.
Many Nigerien citizens reacting on social media to Tchiani’s claims against Nigeria say there is no credibility whatsoever in the allegations.
Some of them are of the view that the Nigerien leader was only looking for an excuse to hang his failure in office on after 17months of ousting his predecessor, Mohamed Bazoum, in a palace coup.
One Nigerien critic even alleged that loyalists of the Niamey military regime are under instruction to spread falsehood that France in collaboration with Nigeria and other neighbouring countries plans to invade Niger.

Former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole has backed the State House of Assembly’s suspension of the 18 elected local government chairmen and their deputies.
DAILY POST reports that Oshiomhole, now a senator representing Edo North senatorial district in the National Assembly, gave the backing to the House of Assembly’s decision while speaking to newsmen at his residence in Iyamho, Estako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
Oshiomhole alleged that the council chairmen were paying huge amounts to the immediate past Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki.
According to him, “people already know that there is a new Sheriff in town. He is stopping all the bad guys and stopping the bleeding that Edo was going through.
“It is not a secret that Local Government Councils were paying huge amounts of money to his predecessor (Godwin Obaseki), and he says ‘stop’, not while I am here. We want the money to be used to develop the localities.”
DAILY POST recalls that the Edo State House of Assembly had on December 17, 2024, suspended the 18 Local government chairmen and their deputies for two months for alleged insubordination and gross misconduct.
The council executives were suspended following a petition to the House by the State Governor, Monday Okpebholo who accused the council executives of refusing to submit financial account statements of their local government to the state government.
Meanwhile, a statement by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo and made available to newsmen on Friday in Benin City, however, said the senator scored Governor Okpebholo high in his first month in office.
He observed that Governor Okpebholo had within one month in office set a new record in the history of governance in the State.

The proposed heavyweight clash between British rivals Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua could generate over $300m in revenue, with both camps expressing interest in staging the fight at Wembley Stadium in 2025, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Following his recent defeat to undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk, Fury has dismissed retirement rumours and set his sights on facing Joshua in what could be the biggest fight in British boxing history.
Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn believes the timing is perfect for the long-awaited showdown.
“The reality is there’s only one fight for Tyson Fury and that’s Anthony Joshua. It’s the biggest fight probably in the history of British boxing,” Hearn said.
“I think Tyson Fury is still potentially at the peak of his powers but he’s just not good enough to beat Oleksandr Usyk tonight. But for me, AJ against Fury is the one. It’s the one at Wembley.”
Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh has also expressed interest in making the fight happen, having previously organised Fury’s recent bouts with Usyk during the Riyadh Season.
Fury’s promoter Frank Warren earlier told The Sun the bout would be “what people will want to see.”
Sokoto bombing: Villagers kick as DHQ declares victims killed by terrorists’ explosives

Days after military airstrikes killed at least 10 people in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Christmas Day, some residents of the agrarian community have rejected claims by the military that those hit were terrorists.
Reports indicated that the fighter jet was targeting Lakurawa terrorists in the areas, but in the process dropped explosives that killed residents, and livestock, and burnt several food silos and houses.
Although the Nigerian Air Force promised to launch a thorough investigation into the incident, the NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, defended the airstrikes, stating that they were carried out based on credible intelligence from multiple sources and after confirmatory aerial surveillance.
His claim was corroborated by the Coordinator of the Joint Media Coordination Centre of the Operation, Lieutenant-Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, who insisted that the military operation was based on thorough reconnaissance missions.
When our correspondent visited the LG headquarters on Friday, the mood was tense, and residents wore long faces.
Many people from different communities gathered at the residence of the Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad, to commiserate with him about the incident.
Muhammad insisted that those killed were farmers with no links to terrorists or the alleged Lakurawa sect, as claimed by the military.
The chairman acknowledged the military’s efforts in the community but stressed that the attack could not be overlooked.
Saturday PUNCH gathered that the distance between Silame town and the affected communities is about 20 kilometres, which takes approximately five hours when travelling in a small car.
